The question entering the 2018 season will be the interior of the defensive line. Maliek Collins hasn't practiced because of a foot injury, and David Irving is suspended the first four games of the season. Jihad Ward, Datone Jones, Brian Price, Antwaun Woods, Daniel Ross, and Richard Ash will get the snaps in preseason. Ward and Jones are the early bets to be the starters on opening day at defensive tackle if Collins doesn't make it back in time.
The curse that rookie Dorance Armstrong might have broken
Scales: If you've followed Cowboys football a long time, you've figure out pretty quickly that a rookie who gets #74 won't be wearing it long. That number belonged to "Mr. Cowboy", Bob Lilly, the team's first draft pick (196) and first Dallas Cowboy to enter the team's Ring of Honor and Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Lilly is the only Cowboys player to wear #74 in a regular season game. It will remain that way in 2018, but it has nothing to do with the talent level of the current rookie sporting the #74 jersey in Oxnard.
The Cowboys do not retire jersey numbers, so almost every offseason an incoming rookie is given #74 by the equipment staff. This summer, #74 belongs to rookie fourth-round pick Dorance Armstrong, a defensive end from the University of Kansas.
Behind the scenes, longtime Cowboys' observers jokingly call #74 "the kiss of death" because it's usually given to a player who probably won't last long on the roster. That's not the case this year. Armstrong has been one of the pleasant surprises of camp and he's one of the players that merits a closer look during Thursday's preseason opener at the 49ers.
