At first glance, the health outcomes in Puerto Rico appear to be similar to many U.S. states. Puerto Rico has comparable life expectancies, for instance. However, information from the Global Health Data Exchange reveals that people in Puerto Rico face many unique health-care challenges that many other parts of America do not. They have higher rates of many chronic illnesses, such as respiratory diseases, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. Further, Puerto Ricans experience higher death rates related to these conditions, too, as well as chronic kidney disease and cirrhosis.
