The Washington Post reported on Friday that Nelson’s decision to headline the rally, which will be the first public concert the singer’s ever held for a political candidate, is a breaking point for some of his fans, who took to social media to disown the legend.
Fans swarmed the artist’s Facebook page, where he shared a post announcing his decision, with comments accusing Nelson of aligning with O'Rourke’s “socialist” positions.
“Open your eyes Willie!” one user said on his Facebook. “Beto is a Socialist who probably has lied to you. This is a real shame you support him.”
“Wow what a let down,” another user said. “You would pick a socialist agenda and an Anti American fellow like BETO, shame on you.”
“I am no longer willing to watch that hippie guitarist who supports that … socialist running for Senate,” another user said on Twitter.
Others defended the country music legend: “Not sure what went wrong in your life that would make you insult Willie Nelson. You can argue politics all you want but you cannot argue Willie.”
Amid the criticism he has received for agreeing to headline O’Rourke’s rally, Nelson issued a statement explaining why he decided to back the Texas Democrat.
“My wife Annie and I have met and spoken with Beto and we share his concern for the direction things are headed,” Nelson said in a statement obtained by the Post. “Beto embodies what is special about Texas, an energy and an integrity that is completely genuine.”
Cruz and O'Rourke have been neck-and-neck in polling in deep-red Texas, in what has become one of 2018's most closely watched races.
The rally is scheduled for Sept. 29 in Austin.
