The Horns are still in the mix, but appear to have faded recently in the local product’s recruitment.
As a big recruiting weekend winds down, Austin Bowie wide receiver Elijah Higgins released his top seven schools on Sunday evening and the Texas Longhorns made the cut:
As indicated by the graphic, the other schools that remain under consideration are Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Ohio State, Ole Miss, and Stanford.
The 6’2, 221-pounder saw his stock take off early this year following a big-time performance at the US Army Combine, with the Longhorns officially entering his recruitment at the end of January.
Following a number of visits to campus, Texas seemed like the heavy favorite, but when Lake Travis wide receiver Garrett Wilson committed to Ohio State and Higgins started taking more visits, the Horns seemed to fall off.
First, it was Stanford making a surge throughout the spring and after Higgins took his official visit to Palo Alto in May. A month later, Florida emerged as a serious contender following an official visit to Gainesville.
The Gators now hold the last five 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions for Higgins.
With three wide receivers already committed, Texas will likely take one more prospect at the position. As Higgins enters the final weeks of his recruitment, the question now is whether the Longhorns can once again emerge as a contender.
Higgins is a consensus four-star prospect ranked as the No. 103 player nationally, the No. 17 wide receiver, and the No. 13 player in Texas, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
