Since joining the Astros in the beginning of September, Justin Verlander had not pitched a bad game for Houston. All of his starts were solid, including some in crucial games where the Astros needed a spark.

While his regular season starts were important, the Astros traded for Verlander and took on the heavy burden of his contract because they needed a pitcher who had dominated in the postseason before. Verlander had pitched in a total of 16 postseason games with the Tigers, far more than any pitcher on the Astros roster.

After producing two solid outings for the Astros in the ALDS, Verlander took his game to the next level twice in the ALCS against New York.

First, Verlander took the mound in Game 2 looking to give the Astros a 2-0 lead before heading to New York. Pitching opposite Luis Severino and a stacked Yankees bullpen, Verlander knew he had to have his best stuff. As it turned out, Verlander had his best stuff and then some on that Saturday afternoon in Houston.

Refusing to quit, Verlander pitched a complete game with 13 strikeouts and only 1 run allowed in 124 pitches. The game was Vintage Verlander as the Astros’ ace got stronger as the game progressed, pumping his fastball in the upper 90s and freezing opposing hitters with a nasty curveball.

The Astros needed every single pitch from Verlander, as they were not able to break through against the Yankees until Carlos Correa drove in Jose Altuve for a walkoff RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Then, after delivering one of the best pitched games by an Astro pitcher in postseason history, Verlander was called upon again with the Astros facing elimination in Game 6. Verlander proved that the Yankees could not touch him, firing seven scoreless frames with 8 more strikeouts and only five hits allowed.

Yes, George Springer did bail him out with a great catch at the wall on a long fly ball hit by Todd Frazier, but Verlander looked unhittable otherwise. The stamina was not as great in Game 6, but Verlander still threw a total of 223 pitches in an ALCS where the Astros needed their best pitcher to perform like a classic ace.
